The Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Maritime Navigation and Fixed Platforms on Continental Shelf Act, 2002, gives effect to the International Maritime Organisation Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and its related Protocol. These international agreements aim to prevent and punish acts of terrorism and other unlawful acts that threaten the safety of maritime navigation and fixed platforms on the continental shelf. This Act falls under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Act prescribes severe penalties, including imprisonment (up to life imprisonment) and the death penalty for offenses resulting in death. Penalties vary depending on the nature and severity of the unlawful act.<\/span><\/p>\n
