The Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, provides a legal framework for the efficient and systematic collection of statistics on economic, demographic, social, scientific, and environmental aspects in India. Recognizing the importance of reliable data for policy formulation and national development, the Act empowers designated officers to collect information, mandates cooperation from informants, and establishes measures for data security and appropriate use. This Act falls under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Act was enacted on January 7, 2009, and came into force on June 11, 2010. It consists of six chapters and 34 sections.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Act prescribes penalties for various offenses, including neglect or refusal to supply information, making false statements, obstructing employees, impersonating an employee, and other contraventions. Penalties can include imprisonment, fines, or both. The Act also provides for an adjudicating officer to determine penalties and an appellate mechanism.<\/span><\/p>\n
